207.0 - I Think It's The Baby's Fault

Weight - 207.0
Weight Lost - 28.4 lb. in 69 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1598
Today's MFD calorie allowance range - 1883 for a 2 lb loss/week rate, 2883 for weight maintenance
(*Note - For the time being, I'm just going to list my calorie allowance through MFD's method of BMR + exercise/activity calories burned)
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 544
MFD Calorie Balance - 285 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.6 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 37 (353 total this session) I did everything, including an extra 30 minutes exercising
Exercise - 65 minutes Zumba class

It occurred to me today what my problem is, why I've been so unfocused Sunday, yesterday and today. Sammy's sleep pattern has changed. He now wakes up once or twice in the wee hours of the morning, needing me to put his binky in for him. Then, he gets up at 5am, and only a bottle will put him back to sleep. Then, he's up again at 7:30am. I am getting to bed these days around midnight (it's all that blogging after the kids go to bed,) so even though I sleep until 7:30am, there are enough interruptions to that sleep, that I feel kind of mentally unfocused and need a nap before or after lunch, yesterday I had both. Time to retrain that baby. And I've got to stop blogging so late at night, but it's hard to resist the free time I have after the kids go to bed.

Breakfast - 20 oz. water, 1 pluot (a plum/apricot hybrid), 1/4 cup creamy wheat cooked with 1 cup water and dash of salt, 1 cup frozen strawberries cooked with the creamy wheat, 1 wedge of Laughing Cow creamy swiss cheese, 4 Triscuit Reduced Fat crackers
Total calories - 394

Lunch - 20 oz. water, 1 piece Smith's whole wheat Cottage Bread, 1 teaspoon Miracle Whip Light, 1 slice Oscar Mayer White Turkey Smoked round lunchmeat, 1 wedge Laughing Cow light swiss cheese, 1 large roma tomato (3/4 cup worth), 1 cup or 4 oz. baby carrots, 1 pluot (a plum/apricot hybrid), 1 E.T. Munchies cookie (recipe below)
Total calories - 413

Dinner - 1-1/2 cups Potato Broccoli Bacon Cheese Soup (recipe below,) about 1/2 to 2/3 pluot (a plum/apricot hybrid), 5 E.T. Munchies cookies, 16 oz. water
Total calories - 791

Post Dinner - 8+ oz. water

E.T. Munchies - earned this name because they have Reese's Pieces, E.T.'s favorite candy from the movie. We all got this recipe from my Gram back when the movie first came out. Sue or Mom, do you know where she got the recipe?

1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
1-1/2 cups chunky peanut butter
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
3 eggs (I used 5 egg whites instead)
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. light corn syrup (I'm not sure what this small amount does for the recipe, but it's there, so I put it in)
2 tsp. baking soda
4-1/2 cups oatmeal, quick oats
1/2 bag of 1+ lb. bag (about 1-1/4 cups) Reese's Pieces

95 calories for a 1 oz. cookie (can you see why I blew 1/3 of my calories today on these babies?! But hey, at least there's a ton of fiber in them with the oatmeal.)

Just like most cookie recipes, cream the butter, peanut butter, and sugars together. Add all except the oatmeal & blend, then add the oatmeal & blend. Nope, there is no flour in this recipe. Add the Reese's Pieces & blend. Place about 1-1/2 tablespoon scoops on a baking sheet. Flatten slightly, or the center won't cook enough before the bottoms brown. Bake at 325 for 8 - 11 minutes. In my oven, it's 9 minutes, and not a second more. These cookies will brown on the bottom quickly, so keep an eye on them. When you take them out, let them cool several minutes before moving them to a cooling rack, otherwise they will fall apart. When you store the cookies, you may want to separate the layers with wax paper, but I hardly ever bother, because they don't last very long in my house.

Potato Broccoli Bacon Cheese Soup - made to feed my army

7 cups cubed (1/4" to 1/2" cubes) raw potatoes, peeled
2 cups raw broccoli crowns, chopped into big chunks, 1/2" to 1"
2 cups sliced baby carrots
5 cups water (cook the veggies in 4 cups water, then use the remaining cup to make the cornstarch slurry)
6 cups skim milk
8 oz. (I used 9 oz. tonight, but you can just use an 8oz. bag) grated cheese (cheddar is probably best, but I used colby/jack tonight)
6 tablespoons cornstarch
2-1/2 teaspoons salt
1 4.5 oz. bag of Oscar Mayer Real Bacon Bits

Makes about 16 cups of soup, each cup has 184 calories, 6.3 grams fat

First cook the veggies in 4 cups of water until the potatoes are tender. Add the milk and bacon bits and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally to keep the milk from burning. Mix the cornstarch into 1 cup of cold water, pour into the soup. Stir soup occasionally until it is thick and bubbly. Add the salt and grated cheese. Stir until the cheese is melted into the soup. Taste the salt level, add more if you like. You could also add more broccoli. I probably would have used a 16oz. bag of frozen cut broccoli, but the little bit of raw broccoli is all I had on hand.

207.0 - Totally Brain Dead Today

Weight - 207.0 (that's more like it)
Weight Lost - 28.4 lb. in 68 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1626
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1702 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1516 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 207 pounds, which means my BMR is 1678 calories, so for 2lb loss a week, it's 678 + calories burned during exercise. That's just crazy talk. No way is that enough, that's why I use the MFD calorie allowance. My Livestrong's The Daily Plate calorie allowance for 207 pounds at a Moderately Active level for a 2 lb. weight loss is 1860 calories. That's better.
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 363
MFD Calorie Balance - 76 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.2 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 38 (316 total this session) I did everything, including an extra 15 minutes exercising as well as posting
Exercise - 25 minutes on the Gazelle, resistance 2, then 24 minute walk after dinner.

Man, I was so brain dead today. I don't know why. I just woke up with no motivation whatsoever. I wound up taking 2 naps today, not really feeling any physical exhaustion, but I just couldn't make myself do anything today. Weird. At least I didn't fall off the healthy wagon today, but man, I sure wanted to. It was one of those days where I felt like lying in bed all day, reading a juicy book and picking Hershey's Extra Creamy Milk Chocolate Nuggets with Toffee and Almonds out of a bag and eating them like popcorn. It's a good thing I've sworn off the naughty, juicy books, or I probably would have caved and spent all day in bed. I think I only ate well because I live for the satisfaction of seeing the numbers at the end of the day tell me I've been a good girl. I am "one" with the computer and online data-crunching.

I did a post tonight on HWHL about portion size, but you can also read the post I wrote three years ago about portion size, also.

Breakfast - 20 oz. water, 1 pluot (a plum/apricot hybrid), 1/4 cup creamy wheat cooked with 1 cup water and dash of salt, 1 cup frozen strawberries cooked with the creamy wheat, 4 little pieces of popcorn chicken (blame Connor, who came with me to Walmart after getting his shots today for kindgergarden, he loves getting a cup of popcorn chicken from the deli), 1 wedge of Laughing Cow creamy swiss cheese, 1 18g/0.64 oz. choc chip cookie (recipe on yesterday's post)
Total calories - 467

Lunch - 20 oz. water, 1 piece Smith's whole wheat Cottage Bread, 1/2 tablespoon Miracle Whip Light, 1 slice Oscar Mayer White Turkey Smoked round lunchmeat, 1 wedge Laughing Cow light swiss cheese, 1 roma tomato (2/3 cup worth), 1 cup or 4 oz. baby carrots
Total calories - 235

Snack - 1 Great Value Chocolate & Vanilla ice cream sandwich, 5 Triscuit Reduced Fat crackers
Total calories - 246

Dinner - 1 cup Chicken Stir Fry (recipe below,) 1 cup cooked brown rice, 4 Kroger brussels sprouts frozen then cooked, 24 oz. water
Total calories - 400

Dessert - 4-3/8 oz. of apple crisp (recipe below,) 1/2 cup frozen blackberries reheated & put on top of apple crisp
Total calories - 278

Chicken Stir Fry - recipe to feed my army

13 oz. or 3 cups chopped cooked chicken breast, about 3 chicken breasts
2 16oz. bags of frozen stir fry mixes
1/2 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons brown sugar
2-1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
3 cups water
cooked white rice (2 to 1 ratio, 2 measures of water for 1 measure of rice, then cook)
OR cooked brown rice (increase ratio to 2.5 water to 1 dry rice)

Put the 2 bags of veggies in an extra large skillet with deep sides, or in a large pot. Pour 2 cups of the water over the top and steam the veggies. Put the remaining water, the soy sauce, the brown sugar, and the cornstarch together in a bowl or measuring cup and stir together until smooth. Then pour the mixture over the veggies. Cook until the sauce thickens. Then serve it over rice.

1 cup of the stir fry mixture is 126 calories, and 1 cup cooked brown rice is 244 calories, for a total of 370 calories.

Apple Crisp

6 to 7 Granny Smith apples, peeled & sliced, or 8 cups, or 27 oz.
Topping:
1/2 cup butter, softened (yep, butter not margarine)
3/4 cup brown sugar
2/3 cup white flour
2/3 cup quick oats
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. nutmeg

Place apple slices in baking dish, about 9x13 or smaller. Mix topping ingredients together with fork or pastry blender. Sprinkle over top of apples. Bake at 375 for 35 to 40 minutes.

54 calories per 1 oz. serving by weight (I weighed all the ingredients, added the calories, then divided the calories by the total # of ounces.) You will obviously want to eat more than 1 oz., but knowing how many calories are in 1 oz. gives you a starting point. I ate a pretty decent portion for a little over 4 oz. worth tonight. Don't have a digital scale? Go get one!! Overstock.com has a bunch to choose from.

208.4 - Detailed Food Log Begins Again

Weight - 208.4 (that's better)
Weight Lost - 27.0 lb. in 67 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1381
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1474 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 127
MFD Calorie Balance - 93 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.2 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 42 (280 total this session) I did everything, as well as posted, plus earning 5 extra points for posting about summer goals for Challenge #2 (I'd already commented about them, but Audrey did say comment OR post, so I'm splitting the difference, and only taking 5 points for posting as well.)
Exercise - 30 minute walk

I've been thinking for a while that I should get back to recording my food here on my weight-loss blog. I track it at myfooddiary.com, so it's all recorded there, but it might be interesting to some of you to see what in the world I eat everyday. So, Jenn, thanks for zoning in on my brain waves and giving me an extra kick, this addition is for you tonight:

Breakfast - 1 banana, 1 choc chip cookie (recipe below), and 4 oz. 2% milk
Total calories - 260

Lunch - creamy wheat/malt o meal/farina 1/4 cup cooked with 1 cup water & dash of salt, 1 cup frozen strawberries cooked with the wheat, 2 cups watermelon, 1/2 ice cream sandwich, 1 wedge Laughing Cow light creamy swiss cheese, 4 Triscuit Reduced Fat crackers, 20 oz. water
Total calories - 486

Dinner - 2 cups of my homemade chicken noodle soup (recipe below), 1 half-wheat dinner roll (recipe below), 1 tablespoon Smart Balance light, 1/4 cup frozen spinach, 3/4 cup frozen corn, 3/4 cup frozen peas and carrots, then all veggies cooked, 20 oz water
Total calories - 635

After Dinner - 24 oz. water

Chocolate Chip Cookies - Half Wheat No Yolks

2 sticks (1 cup) butter (yep, butter, not margarine)
3/4 cup white sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar
3 egg whites
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/4 cup whole wheat flour (I ground wheat on the finest setting, you don't even notice the wheat taste in the cookies)
1-1/4 cup white flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1 12oz. bag of semi-sweet mini chocolate chips (Kroger brand, at Smith's)

125 calories per 1 oz. cookie

Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup

15 cups water
15 teaspoons chicken base (I use the Better Than Bouillon Reduced Sodium brand from Costco)
13 oz. or 3 cups chopped cooked chicken breast (it's about 3 chicken breasts)
4 cups baby carrots sliced
4 cups chopped celery
1 16oz. bag of Country Pasta homemade style egg noodle pasta

Mix the chicken base together with the water, bring to a boil. Add the chicken and the carrots. Cook until the carrots are almost tender. Add the celery and dry noodles. Cook until the noodles are done to your taste. It's enough to feed an army, but that's what I've got, an army that loves this soup.

138 calories per 1 cup of soup

Half-Wheat Homemade Rolls

1-1/4 cup skim milk, warm it up in the microwave to lukewarm/warm but not hot
4 teaspoons yeast
3 tablespoons canola oil
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups white flour
1 tsp. salt
1/4 cup sugar

Dissolve the yeast in the milk. Add the canola oil, then the flour, salt and sugar. Turn on the bread machine, but only on the dough setting. I wound up having to add 2 tablespoons of water, because the dough was so thick. If you are making this by hand, use the "sponge method." That means that you only add 1/2 the flour, and let it rise first, or "sponge." Then, after it doubles in volume, mix in the rest of the flour. Let it rise again. Then form into balls & place in a baking pan, something between an 8x8 square pan, and a 9x13 pan. Let rolls rise until double. Bake at 350 for 13 to 15 minutes. Makes 16 rolls, on the thick side, instead of light and fluffy.

151 calories each roll.

209.4 - Aaaaaaaack!

Weight - 209.4
Weight Lost - 26.0 lb. in 66 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1391
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1902 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 563
MFD Calorie Balance - 511 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.0 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 37 (238 total this session) I did everything, including an extra 30 minutes of exercise. I posted again, too, but I've already maxed out my extra posting points for the week.
Exercise - 2 min. walking on the treadmill at a 3.0 mph rate just to warm up, then I ran 1.72 miles at a 4.0 mph rate for 25.75 minutes. I thought I'd ran 1.75 miles, but now that I did the math, I realize it was just a little under. Anyway, I think I'll attempt to increase my miles by 1/4 mile every week, maybe more. That should get me to 3 miles, or 5K by October. After running, I did 20 laps in the pool, about 34 minutes, a little over 1/2 mile. I'm so slow! I'm only about 1/3 of Olympic speed. I wish my short little body could go faster.

Well, I'll definitely be considering yesterday my "free day" of the session for the HWHL points. Yikes! Maybe I had more calories than I thought I did. But it was probably mostly due to the bulk issue. Let's see if I can discuss this delicately. Whatever calories your food imparts and the amount you have to burn to get rid of them, you also have to get rid of the extra bulk. I just had too much bulk, or physical volume of food, close to bedtime, and it was all still sitting in my body when I weighed myself this morning. I usually have about half the volume that I ate last night. But, I think I'm past that now. We'll see what the scales say in the morning.

207.0 - Anniversary Dinner

Weight - 207.0
Weight Lost - 28.4 lb. in 65 days

Total Calories Eaten - 2602
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1699 for a 2 lb loss/week rate, or 2699 for weight maintenance
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 360
MFD Calorie Balance - 903 over at 2lb loss/week rate, or 97 under for weight maintenance
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 0.2 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 32 (201 total this session) I did everything, except eating all my fruits and veggies, although I bet I was pretty close, and I also forgot that darn multi-vitamin.
Exercise - 30 minutes on the elliptical at the Rec Center. I did the Precor efx576i, 2.30 miles, 340.7 cal, crossramp 5, resistance 7 for 18 min, then resistance 10 for 12 min (way hard for me!)

I'm glad I decided to do the elliptical in the morning, even though I knew I was going to do the evening Zumba class. Because, right as I was going to cook dinner, Zen called me and reminded me it was our anniversary. Yikes! I totally forgot!! So, Zen picked up pizza for the kids, I hopped in the shower (I thought I was going to get all sweaty at Zumba, so I hadn't bothered yet), and Zen took me out to eat at a local Mexican restaurant. I pretty much ate what I wanted, totally awesome fajitas, but skipped the soda pop. I guesstimated my calories when I got home, looking up similar meals on myfooddiary.com, and I barely came in under weght maintenance level, but that's still kind of a guess. I probably should just take a hit, and use this day as my one free day with calories. What do you think?

These were in the house for two days, and I didn't eat ONE, nope NOT ONE. Aren't you proud of me?

Exercise - 55 minutes of Zumba class, then 5 minutes on the elliptical.

Here's my post on HWHL tonight:

It's the lick-your-finger-and-listen-to-it-sizzle-on-your-tushie look!

I had this wonderful experience when I took the kids down to Salt Lake for a 24-hr marathon school clothes shopping spree last week. I started out just thinking I would look at dresses at Ross, kind of just for fun. Well, I got a little carried away, and wound up buying nearly a whole new wardrobe of shirts (I already had "skinny" jeans in my closet) there and at Target. But it was all on sale, I swear!! I didn't spend more than $200 (but we're not counting the running shoes). I have weeded out nearly my entire closet, getting rid of almost everything I owned. The tents (as Sue calls them) are gone, leaving me with new clothes that show off my dwindling, healthier figure. I have been a solid size 18 since that trip, having started out at a size 22 two months ago. And you know what I did tonight? I tried on those black size 16 jeans that have been teasing me in my closet for a year and a half, and they fit!! Wahoo!! I paired them with one of the new stylish shirts I bought last week down in Salt Lake. Watch out world! Hot chick on the loose!

Exercise - 2 min. 3mph walking on treadmill, then 22.5 min 4mph jogging on treadmill, then 35+ min. laps in the pool with a little diving under the water.

Posting this on HWHL -

I finally used up my prescription prenatal vitamins, so I went shopping for regular vitamins at the store. What a pain! There are so many choices, it's hard to know what to pick. I finally settled on a big jar of pill packets that each have five big pills in them. I had enough trouble gagging down one big pill, now I have five to deal with. Clearly I did not think about that before I bought them, but at the store I was thinking how much healthier it would be to have the extra fish oil pill, calcium pill, vitamin D3 pill, and cranberry pill (urinary health?). I hope they are worth it.

HWHL Points Today - 47 (86 total this session) I did everything, including an extra 30 minutes of exercise and the 10-point challenge for checking the summer goals, which I posted on tonight. I never added it to last week's challenge, because I thought it was going to be a two-week session. But it got cut short, so I'm making sure to add it in early this time.
Exercise - 60 minutes of Zumba class

Finally broke 209. Whew! Man, I was going to eat more today, but I was focused on getting things done. Frankly, I think that's a major key to my success. I don't sit around goofing off at all. I keep my mind busy on other things, so I don't have a chance to obsess about food.

Man, that weight isn't moving very fast, despite my best efforts. Maybe I need to shock my body by pigging out one day. Hmmm...

Exercise - walked for 50 minutes, 2.25 miles, 2.7 miles/hr (Man, my legs are short! I am a troll.)

I have to do a whole post about my recent shopping trip earlier this week. But more on that later. I went for a walk tonight and took Sammy in the stroller. It wasn't a very high intensity walk, but it was good to get out and clear my head. I wish I could do it every night after dinner, but it's hard to get away sometimes at that time of night when Zen is not available and the kids are restless. But I really enjoyed the chance to get out and clear my head.

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.1 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 27 (196 total this session), just fell short of my 64 oz. water (darn it!), and I didn't officially exercise for HWHL points, although I did earn some MFD activity points.
Exercise - I won't count this towards the HWHL points, but I did the shopping today, about 1 hour, trying to walk fast through Wal-Mart and Smith's, and worked up a little sweat.

Man, I was busy today! I think that's why my calories were nearly half of what they should be. Although I did take a much needed break after the last two wonderful days with my sister Sue who was visiting, and took about a 3 hour nap.

I got my first official pair of running shoes yesterday:

They are awesome!! I ran in them today, for the first time. My knees thank me. I liked them so much, I went out and bought another pair of the Asics brand for Zumba class. Can't wait to use those tomorrow!!

HWHL Points Today - 28 (64 total this session) Man, missed a lot of points today, not enough fruits and veggies, forgot the vitamin, and there's nothing new to comment on. I'm going to have to post tomorrow, to get those 5 points!
Exercise - 45 minutes walking around my Mom's neighborhood

I was in American Fork today, shopping like mad with the teenagers for school clothes. Alicia, I know, I know, I had this big plan of meeting with everyone when I came down for school shopping. The thing I totally forgot was that we would be in the middle of swim lessons, and that we would have to make it a 24-hr lightening fast trip, drive down the night before, shop all day the next day, and drive home that night, which is what we did today. Sorry! I feel bad. But we definitely need to plan a big to-do when we come down for the 5K walk/10K run in October.

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.7 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 36 (36 total this session)
Exercise - 45 minutes in the pool. It was kind of interesting today. By the time I made it over to the rec center, the lap pool was being used for swim lessons, so I went over to the Aquatic Center, and swam in the lazy river. Some of the time was probably not very productive, but about half-way through, I discovered that I could get a good workout by swimming against the current. In a few places, it was so strong that I could basically swim in place, as if I were on a treadmill. It was cool!

Exercise - Did the equivalent of 5 min. of step aerobics. All I know was that I was literally running up and down the stairs getting ready for church, and I was out of breath and sweating by the time I got in the car. Yeah, sometimes I even count the little things. Sue me.

Okay, the past week or so, when I've been in the pool, I've noticed that my swimsuit is just hanging off me, and the straps fall down all the time. And then I thought, "Oh yeah, this is the suit I bought for my last pregnancy!" No wonder! So, I opened my drawers, looking for the smaller swimsuits, and like the book, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, one thing lead to another, and I removed from my drawers and closet every bit of clothing that no longer fit, even the stuff I thought was cute, but was now too big. Because, sister, I am NEVER, NEVER, NEVER going back to the 20's in clothing. And I'm gunning for those size 18's like crazy!

Sorry, I was a little late with my reporting for this day. I decided to go to bed before midnight last night, no matter what, so I left this day's reporting until the next morning.

I was just thinking about the next session on HWHL, and I'm not 100% sure what my 30-point goal is going to be, maybe just to get down to 205, and then the next session, my goal will be to break 200!!! Good Grief, I could break 200 by Saturday, Sept. 11th. That's six weeks BEFORE my birthday. By my birthday, I could break 190!! OH. MY. WORD!!! Not only, will I be in a size 18, but I could be in a 16 by my birthday!! Wahoo!!

HWHL Points Today - 78 (497 total this session) Okay, to explain the obnoxious amount of points today. 34 points for the usual stuff (35 minus 1 because I was so busy I forgot to eat lunch, but never fear, I made up the calories later with an ice cream sandwich and homemade cookies), plus 4 extra exercise points, 15 points for the challenge at the beginning of the session to work on something I'd been slacking on, and that was the daily vitamin. I believe I took mine everyday this challenge. Also the 30 points for working on a goal during the session, and my goal was to break that dumb plateau, and boy, sister, did I!!! That weight ran away crying! Take that!! I might have to make my goal next challenge, to break 500 points on HWHL. Sweet!! But then, that's going to depend on have an extra challenge like we did this time.
Exercise - 35 min in the pool, 25 of which was 1/2 mile & 16 laps, then 5 min. breaststroke, then another five casually swimming on the lazy river at the new Aquatic Center, then I did 55 min Zumba class.

213.6 - When Do You Become An Athlete?

Weight - 213.6
Weight Lost - 21.8 lb. in 50 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1680
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2397 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 1014
MFD Calorie Balance - 717 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.4 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 36 (419 total this session) I blew a lot of things today, like my fruits and veggies, and I just munched a cookie right at bedtime, but I made up for it by posting and by exercising 90 minutes today!!
Exercise - 24 min. of laps in the pool, 1/2 mile, and 60 min of Zumba class, 6 min of steps (I ran back and forth to the rec center 3 times today, it's a big facility, plus a ton of running up and down the stairs all day with the kids, etc., so I gave myself 6 min of steps to cap off the 24 min of swimming)

Okay, so I had this goal to get up at 5am and swim. Sooooo didn't happen. But I did get up later and go. I ran out of time to do a mile, but I did my fastest swimming stroke, called freestyle or crawl, so I did a half-mile in 24 minutes. I might try and see if I can do a mile tomorrow.

I just posted on HWHL:

Merriam Webster defines athlete as "a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina." I've been getting in pretty good shape, but I don't think I'm an "athlete" yet. Not by a long shot. To me, athlete implies not just physical fitness, but also participation in some kind of competition. But how often, and what kind?

I was thinking about this as I was swimming laps today. I did 1/2 mile in 24 minutes. A mile, 5280 feet, is 1609.344 meters, so a 1/2 mile is about 800 meters. The women's Olympic record for 800 meters is 8:14.10. Yeah, I'm super-slow in comparison. Should I set a goal of a 12-minute half-mile? Could I be an athlete then?

What are your thoughts? What makes an athlete?

It would be fun, maybe horrifying, to see myself do Zumba! I could have a good laugh, anyway. But still fun!! Sue, if you come next week with the kids to swim in the new Aquatic Center, you have to come do Zumba class with me!!

215.2 - To Run or Not To Run, That Is the Question

Weight - 215.2
Weight Lost - 20.2 lb. in 47 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1570
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1645 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 256
MFD Calorie Balance - 75 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.2 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 36 (301 total this session) I missed one point for not eating breakfast lunch & dinner, but I did post.
Exercise - 30 min. walking & running on the treadmill, starting off with 5 min of walking, then ran a mile in 15 minutes, then alternated walking and running the last ten minutes.

Man, have I kicked that 220 to the curb, or what?!! Okay, first I was thinking that my plateau a week ago was due to not eating enough calories, or needing to increase the intensity in my workouts. Now, I'm thinking it was just that time of the month. Because, once my period hit towards the end of the week last week, the pounds just dumped right off of me. But then again, maybe it was a combo of all three.

I was naughty today, so busy that I only ate a combo breakfast/lunch, and then I didn't eat anything until Connor's birthday dinner (Papa Murphy's chicken & hamburger pizza at his request, plus the ever-yummy Chicken Bacon Artichoke DeLite thin-crust pizza), so most of my calories for the day came at dinner and later with the cake and ice cream. Even though I stayed in my calorie range, the scales will not be kind in the morning.

Okay, here's the big dilemma. I ran today, and at first, my knees did not appreciate that much, but the minor pain went away after a while. Now, at bedtime, my knees are throbbing slightly. Dude, I do not need a chronic knee injury! I hate it, hate it, hate it, but I think I've got to give up the running until I at least get a primo pair of running shoes (I want to follow Trainer Momma's advice on buying good shoes,) and maybe not until I get under 200. I really want to run that 5K in October, and have been secretly fantasizing about running the 10K, but I might have to give up on that dream, even though it feels like quitting. I really think that now that I'm focusing on increasing the intensity of my workouts, I'm getting in better and better shape. But I need to take care of my body in the long run, too. What to do?

I showed up at 20 til closing, that's why I didn't get in the ful 30 minutes. So, I decided to walk off the rest, and wound up walking two miles in 44 minutes. Man, I am so slow when I'm not jogging, or not on a treadmill. I daydream and slow down too much.

217.8 - Diggin' In the Yard

Weight - 217.8
Weight Lost - 17.6 lb. in 44 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1617 (I was going to eat so much food today, on purpose, because I knew I would have a lot of extra exercise points, and I even allowed myself a candy bar, but I still came in under 1800. Rats, I was going to enjoy myself, but I got too busy!)
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2524 for a 2 lb loss/week rate

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.8 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 41 (191 total this session) I did everything today, including an extra 30 min of Zumba exercising and I'm going to count one hour of the yard work as exercise, too. Somebody tell me if this is not okay, and I'll take it off my HWHL points.
Exercise - Yard work for 1 hour 45 min, and Zumba class for 60 min

MFD is always putting up quotes on their pages. This is one of my favorites:

The only place "success" comes before "work" is in the dictionary.
~ Vince Lombardi

I picked a more unusual activity to start my day out with today. I worked in my yard. The main grass is fine, because the kids mow it for me (teenagers do have their uses.) But there are weeds growing up all around the edges, and it looks kind of junky, so I decided to start getting rid of them. The first thing I did was to trim back the grass and dirt that has been encroaching on the sidewalk leading from the street up to our front porch. In the winter, it has been preventing the melted snow from draining in spots, so that little frozen puddles form on top of the sidewalk. So, I hacked away with a yard/ice chisel and shovel at the few inches of lawn on either side of the sidewalk, working up a good sweat and clearing a mini-ditch for rain and melting snow to drain off whenever it is wet. I guess I never got to the weeds today, but I did spend almost two hours on yard work. I could do that nearly every morning for the rest of the summer, I bet. My back yard would no longer look like a scrubby desert, and I could probably grow grass back there, but I just don't have the time, even though I love doing it.

Where does the time go? I swear I am busy doing something productive from the minute I get up to when I go go bed. No tv or books for me, which is my weakness. It seems like the more productive I am, the more behind I get, because I notice more things that need to get done. Although, I got a feeling that the blogging and health-tracking is partly to blame. Sigh...

I had this moment in Zumba class today, when I thought, "Wow, I can actually do 60 minutes of serious exercise with no problem!" I'm not saying I look good doing it. There were some new moves tonight, and even some of the familiar moves I still have difficulty with. I'm so uncoordinated. But it's great to feel fit, healthy and energized.

P.S. Lori, trust me, I am sooooo looking forward to buying some cute workout clothes, especially some sassy Zumba pants. But, first of all, I'm broke. Second of all, I want to wait until I drop under 200, so I can wear the XL 16/18 sizes. I'm still in a 20, and I'm not putting one more dime into clothes that size.

217.8 - My Personal Calorie Range

Weight - 217.8
Weight Lost - 17.6 lb. in 43 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1805
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2148 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL or Trainer Momma calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate at 218 pounds
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 744
MFD Calorie Balance - 343 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.7 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 39 (150 total this session) I did everything today, including an extra 30 min of exercising and posting on HWHL
Exercise - Zumba class for 60 min, and shopping (i.e. walking around the Wal-Mart "warehouse") for 50 min. (a small # of calories, but still a get-off-your-rear-end activity)

Thanks to Mom and Sue for the great comments on yesterday's post. I've been thinking about what my calorie range should be, and this is what I've concluded. I'm going to make 1400 calories the baseline for a 2-pound a week weight loss. That's with no exercising. I like the take My Food Diary has on things - take your baseline, and add "activity" points to it, or calories burned through exercise. That's your calorie allowance for the day. I think their calories-burned calculations are completely all over the place, and not terribly accurate. But based on overall points awarded for a variety of activities, and calorie readings I've gotten off various exercise machines, it's my opinion that if I work out hard, that I burn about 330 calories in a half-hour. That means pushing it on the elliptical, jogging, or zumba class earn this level of calories. Walking is less, and on down from there. Which means that most days, my calorie range will be about 1800. But there are days when I rack up a lot of calories burned with various activities, not just my half-hour of "official" exercise. I'm taking those points, too. For instance, my exercise plan for tomorrow, is to get up and do some serious weeding and edge trimming, then after dinner, I'm going to another 60-min Zumba class. My calorie allowance tomorrow will be over 1800. I guess the proof is in the pudding, as they say. We'll see how the weight comes off.

Speaking of Zumba, I got Dani to go to Zumba class with me today. I think she had a good time. I hope she goes with me again. It's fun to do stuff together, especially good healthy things. I had to laugh as we did class, though, because the walking/running track is above the gym and goes around the perimeter, so that anyone on the track can stand at the railing and watch what's going on in the gym. There was a young teenage boy up there, probably about 12, who was just mezmerized watching about 80 women shake their thing in Zumba class. I'm not sure, but I imagine he was drooling a little. There are some seriously fit and blessed-with-mad-dancing-skills women in that class who wear cute outfits to work out in. I'd glance up periodically and just snicker at him. Sheesh, teenage boys.

218.0 - On A Roll Again

Weight - 218.0
Weight Lost - 17.4 lb. in 42 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1758
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1781 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Moderate Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 1586 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 373
MFD Calorie Balance - 23 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.0 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 36 (111 total this session) I did everything today, including an extra 15 min of exercising
Exercise - I walked/ran 2.05 miles today, in 33 min., improving my time yesterday by a hair. But, I did the two miles interval-style, walking 5 min, running 5 min mostly. The great thing about a treadmill is that it forces you to move at a certain pace. You can't daydream and slow down. I made myself do a 4-mile/hour rate of walking for 5 min., and I was clinging to the treadmill to keep going. I'm hoping to learn to make my legs go faster. I've noticed my knees giving me a few twinges now and then, and I don't want to mess up my joints, so I'm focusing on fast walking more for now, so I can drop some more weight before hitting the running heavy. I've also got to look into getting some serious running shoes, researching the market to get the best I can afford. I want to run, but man I'm getting old, and I do not want to mess up my body. I also did 15 min. of weight machines, focusing on arms and abs, while Connor had his swim lesson.

I was sweating like crazy at the end of my walk/run today. I think there were two parts to the problem of my plateau - I just wasn't eating enough, and my body was protesting by hanging on to the fat longer, and two, now that I'm pushing myself harder, I can tell I wasn't getting a hard enough workout before. I'm really going to focus on getting into a higher level in my workouts. Zumba again tomorrow, and I think Dani is going to come with me!

I changed my occupation activity level again on MFD. Frankly, I think I need to be eating around 1800 calories, and some days it only allows me 1400 or 1500, which I think is nuts for my weight, height, and activity level. We'll see how things go at 1800 for a while.

Okay, Sue, I am completely confused. Since I've lost 17 pounds, I went and redid my calorie allowance on Trainer Momma, and for a 2lb/week loss it is 1586. I asked myself, "How did that drop over 500 calories?" Turns out I messed it up in the first place. It should have been 1697 at 235 pounds. But those still seem kind of low for me. When it says to eat your calorie range on HWHL, does that mean your maintenance calorie allowance, or the 2lb-loss/week calorie allowance?

219.2 - Broke 220 Again, Whew!

Weight - 219.2
Weight Lost - 16.2 lb. in 41 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1997
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2037 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Light Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 814
MFD Calorie Balance - 40 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.1 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 40 (75 total this session) I did everything today, including an extra 45 min of exercising and posting on the HWHL blog
Exercise - I walked 1/4 mile to warm up, then ran a mile in 15:37, faster than I did yesterday. Then an hour later, I did the Zumba class. I was more coordinated today. The instructor repeated a lot of the same steps, so I caught on faster. It's a great workout, I was sweating like crazy by the end, but I still had fun. Thank heaven for teenagers during the summer. I'm going to have to find a sitter in the fall for Emma and Sammy, so I can still do the class.

Well, I did better with my calories today, eating pretty close to my range without going over. I had enough calories left that I had a decadent dessert, something called Hummingbird Cake from one of my visiting teachers. It's a thick, but moist, banana nut cake with cream cheese frosting, and then I added 1/2 cup of vanilla bean ice cream. Yummy in my tummy!

I don't always love eating healthy or exercising, but I do love the effect they have on me, physically as well as mentally. I just feel so strong and ready to face the world each day, confident that I can handle what comes at me.

Some friends from my Zumba class. Left to right - Nicole, Nicole's Mom Lisa, Megan, and me. I told Dani tonight, "See, Nicole went to Zumba, you should try it too." She grudgingly consented to go Thursday. I hope she does! She might have a lot of fun!

Exercise - I was talking to the lady at the front desk at the rec center this morning about being on a plateau, and she suggested switching up my routines. So instead of doing 30 minutes on the same old machine, I picked 3 machines and did 10 minutes each. I did the elliptical for 10 minutes at a crossramp of 10 and resistance 10, 10 minutes on the bike, and then 16:38 on the treadmill, where I ran a mile straight! Okay, that's a really slow mile, but at least I picked up my feet the whole way. I just kept telling myself, "Come on, you can do this!" I absolutely want to be able to run that 5K, and I'm even hoping I'll be capable of running the 10K. Then, I had a bunch of activities throughout the day that kept my body moving: walking around Wal-Mart, taking the kids to swimming lessons, swimming with Connor later at the pool, and then doing some furniture rearranging and cleaning of the kids' rooms. So, I gave myself one more exercise point for HWHL points. I'm doing Zumba again tomorrow, and I hope I can get some pics of my friends that I can post on the HWHL blog.

I think I've plateaued. I've hardly lost any weight the past two weeks, even though I've been "good," eating within my calorie range and exercising every day. I worry now that I'm not eating enough food, and forcing my metabolism to slow down, even though I'm really active. I definitely did NOT eat enough food today. I meant to have dessert tonight, and I bet that would have given me a few hundred extra calories, but I got distracted by all the rearranging we did with the kids' rooms so that Sam can finally assume ownership of the crib.

See the naughtiness? I also struggle with my sodium intake. Sigh...

Exercise - Walked two miles in the morning, took about 44 minutes, then walked to church.

I've changed my activity level again on MFD My Food Diary. My weight loss the last few weeks has not remotely reflected the weight-loss rate MFD calculates for me each day. I changed it from Heavy Activity to Light Activity, which means I can eat about 200 calories less each day. I think that will give me more accurate calculations overall.

I'm still up in the air about taking walks on Sunday. I do bring my MP3 and listen to General Conference talks, and I really enjoy it. But I'm still unsure about if I'm violating the Sabbath. I feel kind of guilty, but it's a good spiritual experience to get out away from the distractions of family life and just commune with the fresh air and the Spirit. People used to walk miles to church, anyway, right?

And I seem not to have suffered on the scales too severely from the obnoxious amount of calories I ate yesterday. Tomorrow's scale appointment might not be too bad.
