233.0

Weight - 233.0
Weight Lost - 4.5 lb. in 7 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1374
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 1009
Calorie Balance - 936 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.9lb loss/week

Exercise - 40 min. Rockin' dvd workout on The Wave by the Firm (see below)

Yep, gotta eat more. I can tell, and not just because of the math. I did feel pretty hungry at the end of the night tonight, so I had a small glass of skim milk. I don't want to sink myself by eating too little, and then my body stages a million-people-strong protest. And maybe it's just that I've had such a busy week that it has distracted me from any major signals my body might have been giving me. But I did seem to have enough energy, despite what the math was saying.

My sister Sue came in to town to night to see my teenagers in the local college summer theatre play for kids in the community. She and I have funny, sometimes contradictory personalities. We are totally lax about some things (we are not exactly the most anal house keepers), but we love crunching data and working the math. I think that's why I have clicked so instantly with this whole calorie-counting thing. I love inputting the data throughout the day, and seeing how the math is working out. I'll think, "Oooh! I'm doing good! I can eat some more!" or I look at the balances and think, "Wow, I bet the scales will go down again tomorrow!" And so far, that's proven to be the case. I know some conventional wisdom is to throw out the scales and just see how your clothes start to fit better, but the little math rewards everyday, even throughout the day, help to keep me motivated. It's that quirky data-cruncher who lives inside.

Man, I worked out on my Firm Wave this morning, and it Kicked. My. Tush. I was so tired by the end, I don't think I've worked out that hard in a while. Made me feel like a big, dorky, uncoordinated wussie. My kids were watching me, and my teenage girl said something along the lines of, "Mom, you look really bad." Yep, I'm like spastic-dancer Elaine on Seinfeld, almost. But I got to thinking later in the day, after several hours of cleaning the house (thus the high number for exercise today) and a hot shower, that it could be good to keep trying this out several times a week, breaking down the harder, more complicated moves. I'd get better over time, and that would give me a boost in the long run to overcome that kind of challenge.

233.5

Weight - 233.5 lb. Yippee!

Total Calories Eaten - 1216
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 928
Calorie Balance - 1016 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
Weight Loss Rate Today - 4lb loss/week

Exercise - Precor Elliptical efx556, 10 min., 0.78 miles, 133.0 cal, resistance #6, and then I swam in the pool for 30 minutes, doing 16 round laps (32 lengths) which is 1/2 mile.

Believe it or not, I think I gotta eat more. The nutritional data from myfooddiary.com is telling me I'm not eating enough fat to process fat-soluable vitamins. I have plenty of energy, except for about an hour right after lunch. Maybe that means I need to add a morning snack.

I'm just so busy! I have tried to be productive every day and get lots of things done, not wasting time watching tv or reading books. And I've gotten up at about seven every morning, with no more naps during the day, so I'm back on a regular sleep schedule. But five kids... Sheesh! When am I ever going to get this Medical Transcription thing done? That's probably an indicator that even if I did have it done and got my certificate, when would I ever have the time to actually work? I don't know. I guess I just have to keep going, keep paying our tithing and hope for a miracle. Sammy got his shots today, and went to bed at 9:30 tonight, so I better get myself in bed, soon, too.

234.0

Weight - 234.0     No. Freaking. Kidding. That's 3.5 pounds lost in five days!

Man, this recipe builder is really, really fun. It helps me try out new recipes and tweak the ingredients, making healthy substitutes, so I can see how to bring down the calories and increase the nutrition in my food.

I'm pretty happy with a small menu of meals to choose from. I could have a few choices for breakfast and lunch, and be pretty happy. And frankly, I'm not all that picky about dinner, but I keep things rotated just so everyone else in the house doesn't get bored. It's not that I don't like variety, it's just that I don't like wasting a lot of time in the kitchen.

Total Calories Eaten - 1195. Okay, I know that sounds nuts, and frankly, if you had told me a week ago I could eat that few calories, I would have said you were out of your mind. But seriously, substituting things made with whole wheat flour instead of white flour, almost eliminating simple sugars, eating lowfat proteins, and adding tons of fresh fruit and veggies has allowed me to eat nearly the same amount of bulk as I did before, but I bet it's cut over half the calories I used to eat.

Total Exercise Calories Allowance - 535
Exercise - Precor efx556 Elliptical - 30 min, 2.27 miles, 3603 strides, 375.8 cal, resistance #6

Calorie Balance - 646 calories left to eat, 3.3 lb loss a week rate

Recipe Builder

It can be a steep learning curve, using the Recipe Builder on MyFoodDiary to figure out the serving sizes for all my homemade recipes, and adding them to the Fridge section. I have to measure and weigh everything, then do lots of math to figure out the relative serving sizes after adding up all the ingredients, sometimes weighing or measuring the entire batch to get to the correct serving size in relation to the nutrition of the whole recipe. But I think after a month or so, I'll be able to do all my daily calorie counting with just a few clicks. But, being a data manipulation person, it's a process I enjoy.

I think this calorie counting business is really paying off, because I can look at my total calories for the day, and weigh them against my calorie allowance, and feel good about the direction I'm going. I felt kind of hopeless, even just a week ago, thinking about how I'm still stuck in a size 22, and wanting to break that 200 pound barrier. But now, based on the math reports I'm getting, I'm pretty sure I can break it by my birthday in October. Sweet! I think I'll get an awesome outfit for my birthday, a great way to celebrate losing the weight.

Total Calories Eaten - 1528
Total Exercise Calories - 295 (Just for running around the house with the kids and doing light housework. Strictly speaking, I don't exercise on Sunday, but I'll probably always wrack up just a few points doing some little extra something in the course of my day with five kids)
Calorie Balance: -85 (meaning I still could have eaten 85 calories)

Man, Busy Day!

Weight - 236.0 pounds (That's okay, probably just water retention. Can't wait to see Monday's weigh-in.)

I hit the ground running this morning, checking out garage sales for twin bed frames, or bunk bed frames. Man, you gotta get there early for the good stuff! Next time, I'll get a newspaper Thursday, Friday, and Saturday and plot out my course, then show up before 8am for the good stuff. Sheesh!

I'm sitting here at 1am, totally loving my clean house. After garage-saling and working out at the rec center, I spent hours organizing seven storage tubs of kids' clothes today. Then, I did the shopping and cleaned up the house from the disaster it's been all week with all the clothes pulled out of the closets. I'll blog more about that on my regular blog. But you can see how I earned so darn many exercise calories on MyFoodDiary.com.

But, I'm going to bed. Sam slept eight hours last night, and he might let me sleep in until seven or eight. We'll see.

Total Calories Eaten - 1258. I even had a Wendy's Frostie after dinner, and I still only had this many calories!! Mostly, it's because I was so busy and determined to finish this clothes sorting once and for all. And, I'm getting the hang of eating healthy. I'm turning into a label reader. Plus, all my grains are whole grains, I eat fresh fruits and/or veggies with every meal, and my meats/dairy are lowfat.

Total Exercise Calories Earned - 2161. Yep, I was super busy today! According to the formulas, I still could have eaten 2221 more calories and been at the 2lb loss/week rate.

25 June

Weight: 235.5 pounds    Wahoo!!

10 am - I'm so excited! The weight is starting to come off! 2 pounds already! Although, the My Food Diary report gave me a frowny face for not eating enough calories. Who'd have thought?! Okay, I think I have the calorie allowance thing figured out for me. If I don't clock ANY exercise/activity of any kind, I can eat 2323 calories to maintain weight, 1573 cal to lose 1.5 lb a week, and 1323 to lose 2 lb a week. So, adding exercise or any kind of activity lets me eat more calories. For instance, yesterday I could have eaten 2691 calories, and still been in the lose-2-lb-a-week category. I only ate half that! I could have eaten a whopping 3691 calories and still maintained my weight. But, I was very active yesterday. I probably won't have that many exercise calories to spend every day. But it's really fun crunching the numbers, and seeing the scale go down.

Also, I had a lot easier time getting myself out of bed this morning before the kids got up. Sammy used to sleep anywhere from 7 to 9 hours at night, but now he's back to 5 or 6 before he's up for a bottle. I think his body needs more calories to stay asleep, but it's still about a month before rice cereal. I wonder if I can start early? I'll have to ask his pediatrician. Anyway, I probably only get about 4-1/2 to 5 hours in a row, plus another one or two when he goes back to sleep, which isn't bad, but it's still hard on my body. It was torture getting up yesterday, but easier this morning. My body is still adjusting back from a newborn's schedule.

Exercise - 30 min. of water aerobics class at the rec center

10:00 PM -

Man, I am T.I.R.E.D., so I am just going to put the summaries from MyFoodDiary logs.

Total Calories - 1707
Total Exercise Calories Earned - 797
Balance - I was 405 calories under the 2 lb loss a week rate. In other words, I could have eaten 405 more calories today.

New Tool

Weight: 237.0 pounds

Man, counting calories yesterday was a HUGE pain in the tushie. You may see me eating the same thing over and over and over, just so I don't have to figure out the math on everything. I can just copy what I did the day before.

I have joined MyFoodDiary.com because their calorie tracker is a LOT more detailed and easier to use than the USDA's My Pyramid, and it, too, has the exercise log. And, as if that wasn't awesome enough, it has a Recipe Builder, which you can use to enter ingredients, and it will calculate detailed nutrition information for you. Sweet! My Food Diary has a 7-day free trial, then costs $9 a month. I can live with that, especially because it helps me save time, and should help me to stay motivated with all the cool info. I need goals and accountability, and I LOVE crunching numbers. It makes the whole thing more real. If anybody (hello, Sue?) needs me to look up calories for them, just text or call me.

But MyPyramid says I can eat 3300 cal to maintain weight, and MyFoodDiary says I can only eat 2100. What's the deal? Oh, I just went and figured it out. I logged all these physical activities on MyPyramid, like walking up and down the stairs throughout the day, and holding Sammy while I feed him, etc. Tiny little things. It allowed me to rack up the calorie expenditure. MyFoodDiary works the same, I just hadn't gotten that detailed. If I do absolutely nothing, I only get 1833 cal to maintain my weight, but if I exercise, and add in the calorie expenditures for "extra" things like putting away groceries, then I get to eat more and still lose weight. Makes me want to get out and be more active with the kids. I can see already that I will have fun playing with numbers like crazy, like it's a challenge to see how I can keep the calories at weight-loss level, and really increase my activity. If I exercise 30 min. every day, throw in some extra little activities (lifting kids, moderate housework, etc.), I can eat about 1700 calories, and lose 1.5 pounds a week. That would be awesome!!!

I might ask Sue if I can join her blog group, Healthy Wife Happy Life. But I don't know how much stuff I can keep up with. Gotta get that Medical Transcription done!!!!! On the other hand, I like the idea of winning challenges. That would be sweet! Another good motivator. Speaking of which, I need a challenge like crazy in order to get my rear in gear on this Medical Transcription course. My goal is to complete 1 lesson a day. I'd like to earn rewards for that, but I need somebody to volunteer to keep tabs on me. I can provide the rewards. Any suggestions?

Exercise - PRECOR Elliptical EFX576i, 25 minutes (ran out of time), 1.70 miles, 264.5 calories, crossramp 1, resistance 1

What I ate -

Breakfast - 16 oz. water, 1/3 cup dry Malt-o-Meal wheat cereal cooked with 1-1/2 cups water about 1/4 tsp salt, 1 Tabl sliced almonds, 1 cups frozen strawberries, 8 oz. 1% milk, 1 med. banana. Total calories - 567

Lunch - 1 slice whole wheat bread, 1 slice Oscar Mayer smoked turkey, 1 slice white american cheese, 1 tsp. Miracle Whip Light, large leaf of romaine lettuce, 1/2 cup of red grapes. Total calories - 291

Snack - 38 oz. water, 4 oz. baby carrots. Total calories - 47

Dinner - 3 tacos (white taco shells, lean hamburger, chicken breast, chedder jack cheese, fat free sour cream, romaine lettuce, tomatoes, salsa), 16 oz. Crystal Light drink, 8 oz. water. Total calories - 460

TOTAL calories consumed for the day - 1365 WOW!! I can't believe that's all I ate!! And I don't feel as starving to death as I did last night. I felt like I could have eaten a big box of donuts, I was so craving some sugar. Maybe I just have to wean my body of all the heavy sugar I've been eating lately, and it won't kick me so hard to give it some junk food. Substitutes I want to make next time: skim milk instead of 1%, some kind of whole-grain tortilla or flatbread instead of taco shells, and skip the shredded cheese in the tacos, just add more fat free sour cream and veggies. It would have saved me about 150 to 210 calories, and about 15 grams of fat! Sheesh!!
TOTAL exercise calories - 1368. It wasn't just the elliptical, it was all the running around, picking up toys, cleaning, chasing Emma around the neighborhood, and bit of stairs that earned me this many exercise calories. Add the input and output together, and I am at the 2 lb/week weight loss rate today. Yahoo!

P.S. For this health blog, I will usually post after breakfast, and just add to it throughout the day, so a blog post isn't really done until late at night.

It's Time Again - Welcome Back!!

It's time again! Time to start up the weight loss battle to get under 200 pounds. Sweet Sammy was born April 6th, I was 259 pounds at maximum, making a weight gain of about 30 to 35 pounds, 20 of which I lost when having him and the few weeks post-birth. I still have 10 post-baby pounds to lose, and of course another 75 after that. Think I can lose 10 pounds by the family reunion? Man, that would be great. I am now in a size 22, and can squeeze into a 20, but only if I lie down on my bed to zip up my jeans. I have several size 20's in my closet, and it would be nice to have more pants to wear.

I started exercising at home about 10 days ago, doing 30 minutes in my Gazelle strider. Today was the first day back at the Rock Springs Family Rec Center. For over a year, they have been building this GREAT indoor swimming pool addition to the rec center, complete with water slides, a lazy river, a kiddie water playground, and an outdoor sprinkler park. It's all supposed to be ready sometime in August, and it should be great fun all year! I can't wait to take the kids there.

I missed the ENTIRE ice skating season this past winter, and I'm also looking forward to taking lessons again this fall, maybe even helping to teach one of the Beginning Tots classes.

For weeks now, I have been taking lots of naps with the baby, which you kind of expect with a newborn. But he's been sleeping through the night for about a month now, and I'm trying to wean myself from all the excess naps. I cannot tell you how much I like naps. I'd probably sleep 14+ hours a day if I could get away with it. I think my body is still on baby time. So, I'm trying to retrain myself to sleep just once a day, so I can get up and exercise before all the kids are up. As it is, it's after one in the afternoon before I'm exercised, dressed, taken care of the kids, and ready to accomplish other projects. I need to reclaim a few hours in the morning to work on things.

Sammy is my fifth child, and it has put me over the edge in time management. In some ways, he is like that third-child stage that so many moms find themselves in, where you feel like you are going non-stop taking care of kids. There is such a huge gap between #2 (Dani) and #3 (Connor) that it took having this fifth one to have three little people so close together who are high-maintenance, to feel like I'm in that third-child stage. Yes, I do have the teenagers to help me, but then they are around a lot less often, simply because they are teenagers, and I have to drive them all over the place.

So, while I feel better now that I'm getting consistent sleep at night, and I've started taking my anti-anxiety Cymbalta again, I'm still overwhelmed time-wise and not getting done the things I want to. That's why I'm committing myself to regular exercise and healthy eating again. I need to get myself back on a schedule so I can be healthy and accomplish the things I need to, primarily finishing my Medical Transcription course.

So, here goes.

I'm going to take a few pages out of Sue's book, and track my calorie intake. I went to the USDA's website, http://www.mypyramid.gov, and from there I went to MyTracker and MyFood-a-pedia, to calculate my average daily physical activities, and my recommended caloric intake. It says 3374 calories a day. I'm assuming that's what I would eat for weight maintenance, but I'll try to cut that down to 2500 or less.

Weight - 237.5 pounds (all my weigh-ins will be at the rec center)
