220.4 - At Bear Lake Today, or, Attack of the Family Reunion!!!

Weight - 220.4
Weight Lost - 15.0 lb. in 38 days

Total Calories Eaten - 4484 (yeah, you read that right, and that's just my best guess, as I was NOT weighing or measuring any of my food at reunion today.)
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1920 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 240
MFD Calorie Balance - went over 2lb loss/week rate by 2564 calories, yikes!!
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.1 lb GAIN/week
HWHL Points Today - none, this session is done, and will start again Monday.
Exercise - 22 minutes jogging/walking, and 8 minutes of crunches

Holy Monkeys!!! I may have been a good girl yesterday at Zen's family reunion, but I totally went off the deep end today. I ate too many Little Death Bombs of Baked Goodness (Costco muffins, pancakes, lemon pound cake.), and let's not forget the homemade ice cream. It's a good thing this HWHL session is over, or I would have been lucky to have 15 points today. Man, I'm scared to see the scales in the morning.

220.4 - In Star Valley Today

Weight - 220.4
Weight Lost - 15.0 lb. in 37 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1526
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 1680 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 0
MFD Calorie Balance - 154 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.3 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 81 (465 total this session) Did the random surprise challenge of trying out a new exercise and posting about it, worth 20 extra points, and I also gave myself the extra 30 bonus points for this session for achieving a goal. I broke 220 (at least once, anyway, but I'm sure it will be permanent soon, and never go back,) I walked/ran a 5K, and I kept up the work on my overall summer goals.
Exercise - No exercise! Aaaargghhh!

I didn't get into Afton, Star Valley, until 1:30am last night, and Sammy woke me up at 6:30am, so I was tired out of my mind, especially after staying up the night before, so no exercise in the morning for me. I meant to go for a walk after dinner, but we had the family program as part of Zen's reunion, and then Sammy was cranky and I gave him and Emma a bath, got everyone in bed, and now it's 10:30pm, and I have to get up at about 5am to exercise, pack, and get back on the road by 7am for my family reunion in Bear Lake. So, the exercise tanked today. Crud, I hate that.

Here's the Zumba post I put on HWHL today:

I took a Zumba class from my local rec center this week, to fulfill this session's challenge. I'd been eyeing it for a few weeks, but it took an invitation from one of my friends from church and book club to finally get me there. It was so much fun! But remember Elaine from Friends? Remember her spastic dancing? That's how I felt in class on Tuesday. But it was so much fun, I had fantasies about actually being good at it one day. Needless to say, I'm going to be taking more Zumba classes in the future. I took my camera with me to class to take pictures of myself with some of my friends from church, but class had already started when I got there, and everyone was too hot and sweaty afterwards for pics. So, here's an intro video about Zumba:

This lady in my class, who I also visit teach, had on these cool "Zumba pants" that have little streamers in strategic places, so that while you dance the streamers move in time to the music. Of course, she looked great all throughout class, but it made me think, what if I could do that some day? I wouldn't dare do it now, because I DO NOT need to draw attention to my rear end. But who doesn't love to accessorize for a great workout? Check out eBay for Zumba pants, and you can also find more info about zumba at www.zumba.com. I'm pretty sure I'm going to break 200 pounds by my birthday at the end of October, and I've been wondering what would be a great b-day gift. How about some sassy Zumba pants?

I'll be shakin' my thing soon!

Exercise - 20 min of Firm Wave stepper workout, then jogged 1/2 mile, and walked about 9 minutes home

Whew! Stayed up late last night helping Sue on her reunion quilt. Sammy and I came down to American Fork today to be with Sue and Mom, and to meet up with some of the HWHL crew. I got to see Victoria Wednesday night, and Sam Thursday morning. Then, on the way out of town, I got to meet with Alicia (hi!) for a brief few minutes at her house before the HWHL dinner in Alpine. Unfortunately, I didn't get to go to that, because I had to pick Dani up from Girl's Camp and then drive us to Star Valley to meet Zen there with the rest of the kids for the Allred family reunion Friday.

Yeah, this body of mine likes to fight back when it comes to losing weight. I lose some weight, then it retains water or something for a few days before it finally lets some more weight go. But I'm sure in a few days' time that 220 will be gone forever.

221.4 - Zumba Was FUN!!

Weight - 221.4 lb (See, I knew it would fight with me, despite my best efforts, but I bet the scales will give it up in the morning.)
Weight Lost - 14.0 lb. in 34 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1411
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2164 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.5 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 37 (319 total this session
Exercise - 60 minutes of Zumba class, then I worked on the treadmill for a mile, running 1/2 mile straight in 7.5 minutes, and then walking the rest, but still a fast pace. Yeah, I'm slow, but I just want to be able to run nonstop, eventually, for the 10K. My pace on the treadmill today proved to me that I must have run close to 1/2 of that 5K, more than I thought, otherwise, I would not have come in at 48 minutes.

Zumba was a fun class today. I was horribly uncoordinated, but still had a great time. There was a point, maybe about one-third to half way through, that I thought, "Man, I really am getting in shape, because I can keep up with this class, no problem." I sweat like crazy, but it was a great workout. I'm going to do a bigger post tomorrow on the HWHL blog, as part of this session's challenge, to try something new. Must go to bed now, so I can get up before 5am, run a little at the gym, then do the circuit training class.

221.0 - Zumba Tomorrow

Weight - 221.0 lb

Total Calories Eaten - 1606

MFD Calorie Balance - 998 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 4.0 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 38 (282 total this session
Exercise - 15 minutes on the treadmill, about 60% jogging 40% walking, also 60 minutes circuit training class

I've got a feeling that 220 is going to fight with me, despite eating right and exercising. But I had a great exercise session today. I got up at 4:30 am to be in line when the Rec Center opened at 5am, to sign my son Connor up for swim lessons. Yep, the beginner classes fill up that fast. As it was, the 9am & 10am classes were already filled, despite getting there early. So, we took an 11am class. August will definitely be interesting, but I'm hoping it will help Connor get used to a schedule before school starts.

Anyway, after I got him signed up, I got myself on the treadmill to start practicing for the 5K/10K in October. But, about 13 minutes into it, my friend I know from church and book club came over to say hi, and invited me to go to the circuit training class with her, so I did. Thus, the extra points for HWHL. Tomorrow I'm going to the zumba class with another friend, whose family we had over for dinner tonight. I'll see if I can get anyone to pose for pictures with me for the HWHL post I'll do tomorrow, to meet this session's challenge.

Exercise - I walked/ran a 5K today!! Also did more walking than I usually do, just getting around Cokeville.

It was a bright, chilly morning in Cokeville today. Someone said it was a little over 40 degrees, better than freezing, but still. Sue got me up at 5:30 am to head over to the park. On the way there, I was excited, thinking about the awesome feat I was going to accomplish today, doing a 5K and attempting to run part of it. A great thing, you know, for a fat chick. But I wasn't worried about whether or not I could finish, I mean I've been working out for a month, I just envisioned the feeling of success at the finish line. I'm just glad no one at registration was bold enough to enquire about my general health.

But as we headed up the canyon in Sue's friend's car, and the road just kept going and going, I thought, "Holy Cow, 3 miles is a long way!" At the top, standing around waiting for the race to start, I felt very conspicuous. I had to have been the heaviest person there. And not just that, I was the only one dorky enough to have a big camera strapped to me like a fanny pack. But since I knew it wasn't about racing, and just about finishing, I'd decided the night before to take my camera on the run.

Sue stretching out before the race.

Sue's friends, Becca and (Sue, fill in the blank, I'm horrible with names.)

Me and Sue, psyched and ready to go. It wasn't long into the race before I took off that sweatshirt, and tied it around my waist.

The race started right at 7:00am with a pistol shot. It only took about 10 seconds, maybe 20, for me to get left in the dust. Almost the entire rest of the way, the only people behind me were two walking moms with a stroller, and the 5-months-pregnant lady. I started off with a little jog, and it wasn't long before I started walking. As I was being passed, I could here someone say, "She's not even running." Yeah, shut up.

Just a little ways down the road, when almost everyone was still in a pack, these horses ran up to the gate to watch all the people pass.

It was so beautiful out there, with the sun coming up and the wonderful fresh air. If you're a runner, you want to live in Cokeville during the summer.

A small reminder that we are in ranch country.

I'd settled into a pace, where I would walk for a 20-count, then jog for a 20-count, gripping the tied sleeves of my sweatshirt to keep myself anchored. That count got longer, and longer, but when I rounded a corner, and saw this big house we'd passed on the way up, I knew I was getting closer.

It was a great feeling coming out of the canyon, and seeing the Flying J gas station. It couldn't have been much longer, about a mile or less, to the finish line. This was about the point where the "stroller chicks," as I came to think of them, were coming up on my heels, and I really wanted to beat them to the finish line. Sue met me at the corner of Main Street and the highway, where the cops were blocking traffic for the runners. It was great to see her. I eventually got passed by the stroller chicks, dang it, but I was determined not to get beat by the pregnant lady. I could hear her jogging behind me, and it occurred to me later that I cut a corner as I rounded the last bend before the finish line, because I was following Sue, who ran ahead to take my picture. I wonder if the pregnant lady was cussing at me. Oops!

Everyone clapped for me coming in to the finish line. It was great, although I bet they were thinking, "Man, I'm glad that's just about the last person, I'm ready for this to be done!"

Yey for me! My time was 47:56, which I thought was really good. I have short stubby legs, and I can rarely walk a 20-minute mile, so I know the jogging today helped my time. In total, I probably jogged about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way. Sue did really awesome with 28 minutes and change, meeting her goal of coming in under 30 minutes.

Me & Sue. Awesome!!

Our kids got up earlier than usual and met us just down the road from the park. Lily was after some donuts from the store. It wound up being closed, so later Zen took them down to the Flying J gas station to get them all sugared up. Thanks, sweetie.

It was good to see their sweet, crusty morning faces.

After the race, I just kept thinking, "Man, I gotta run more so I can run the whole 5K at Thanksgiving Point in October!" I ought to be 20 pounds lighter by then, and have broken 200 (oh, that is going to feel so good!!!), so I think it will be a good race. Sue, are you going to do the 10K?

Zen is the one in our family who loves to get in the car and go for a scenic drive. So, today, he took us outside of town to visit the Petroglyphs. We drove for about 20 minutes down a dirt road, parked the car at the rest area, then hiked about another 15 minutes up to the base of the wind-and-water-marked rocks to see the petroglyphs carved into the rock face. I wasn't even thinking in terms of exercise points before we got there, but as I was walking, I thought, "Man, this is good exercise!" I should get out of the house more in the summer and go see things.

Will the scales be kind to me in the morning?

Crawling into a little cave with Connor and Emma. I'd love to do some serious hiking some time in the future, maybe Yellowstone. It's great to think I could do that someday, and be in great shape to enjoy the experience.

Man, today was one of those days when you are busy all day, but at the end you feel like nothing got done. Although, I probably spent too much time at the computer, reading old posts on the HWHL blog.

I experimented with my new electric ice cream maker, no ice and salt required. We ate all the ice cream already, so I'll make a new batch tomorrow and post it here.

I got Dani a notebook yesterday. She writes down what and how much she ate, and I write in her calories. She's off to a good start!!

Exercise - swimming laps at Rec Center, 30 min, 4 different types of strokes, 16 laps, 32 lengths, 1/2 mile

Well, pooh, I am STILL paying for the excesses of the weekend. Free Day is not all it's cracked up to be. I think I'll just slip in a few more yummy snacks throughout the week. Heaven knows, I am still not eating enough calories. Nighttime is my weakness, because I am slowing down and not distracted by activities anymore, but I often restrain myself, because I don't want to go to bed on a full stomach. I got this ice cream machine in the mail today, and I can't wait to try out some lite recipes tomorrow!

Well, I have finally had an effect on Dani, my almost-13-years-old teenage girl, who is about 40 to 50 pounds overweight. I've been sharing my successes and healthy tips with her, but I have not required that she change what she does. And yesterday, all on her own, she started exercising. Then today, she started counting calories, and I helped her figure out her weight-loss calorie range (it's about 2044) using the formula from Trainer Momma, and I helped her track her calories throughout the day. I stressed that she not lose more than 2 pounds a week, and that she make sure to eat her fruits and veggies, because she is still in the growing phase of her life, and really, really needs to make sure she is getting good nutrition.

She asked, "You mean, if I keep doing this (exercising & eating right), I could look good by Christmas?" She is really excited about the idea of being in control of her body, and hopefully I am giving her good, healthy tools to do that. I will have to make sure I emphasize good nutrition and healthy habits, because I don't need an image-obsessed-eating-disorder-afflicted lovely young daughter, either.

Exercise - Precor Elliptical efx576i, 30 min, alternating 5 min forwards & backwards, 2.20 miles, 3738 strides, 342.0 calories, crossramp 5, resistance 5

Man, I was fighting an uphill battle today. I wanted to eat every single E.T. Munchies cookie that was left, which was probably about 2500 calories. Sigh. I gotta eat more calories tomorrow. I was kind of anal today, wanting to lose the weight I gained on Free Day. I would really like to break 220 this week.

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.8 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - none, today is a "free" day. The next two-week session starts tomorrow.
Exercise - none

Yep, paid for the excesses of yesterday, but we'll see what my body thinks about that over the next few days. I was pretty much back on the wagon today, at least as far as calories are concerned. I was going to go for an evening stroll, but woke up late from my Sunday nap. By the time I got dinner for everyone, it was time to start our nightly routine of scriptures, baths, and the usual tedious task of getting toddlers in bed.

I didn't get around to making cookies yesterday, but I made the time, and room in my calories, for E.T. Munchies today:
Mmmm... yummy E.T. Munchies. The only recipe change I made was to use egg white instead of whole eggs (to help my really bad cholesterol.) Otherwise, it was a peanut butter, sugar, and Reese's Pieces delight!

P.S. I copied the summary table of my food stats from yesterday. The red and pink spots are "bad." I was naughty!

222.2 - My First Free Day

Weight - 222.2 lb
Weight Lost - 13.2 lb. in 24 days

Total Calories Eaten - 2725
Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2257 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 565
MFD Calorie Balance - 468 over the 2lb loss/week rate, but I still had 532 calories I could have eaten at the weight maintenance level of 3257, or the 3189.3 HWHL baseline level.
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 1.1 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - none, today and tomorrow are "free" days. The next two-week session starts Monday.
Exercise - 30 minutes Wave stepper workout w/3lb weights. 7 min of crunches, 25 min shopping. Okay, like I explained before, I know shopping as an activity is kind of lame, but then MFD doesn't give me very many "points" for that anyway, only about 50 calories-worth. But every little bit helps!

Free day was an interesting experience today. Instead of impulsively just eating whatever came to mind, I consciously made choices about what I ate, and still came in at a weight-loss rate. Not much, but still, I didn't go over my MFD or HWHL baseline for weight maintenance (around 3000 calories.) A few days ago, when I was feeling worn out, I was totally looking forward to free day, and eating a ton of junk food, like cookies, ice cream, and pizza. I did most of that, but I still had that internal "pause button," where you think about your choices, what effect they will have, and you realize that you have the will to refuse and stick with your goals, instead of giving in to your emotions. I could really tell when my body was actually hungry, instead of wanting food for emotional reasons. Frankly, I ate a few things just because it was "free day," and I felt like I had something to prove, like I'm not a total control freak or something and couldn't allow myself a treat every once in a while, not because I was really hungry or craving anything.

And man, was I thirsty! Getting my HWHL 64oz. of water in has been no problem this week, because I've been drinking closer to 80oz., and sometimes more. I'm sure part of that is due to the summer time. But I'm learning to recognize the sensation of thirst, that dry spot at the back of my throat, and feed it some water, instead of grabbing a soda pop, or more likely, a moist piece of food.

But, I'll tease you here with some of the things I ate today, featuring dinner by Papa Murphy's:

Classic pepperoni. Yummmmm!!

Man, I love a spinach artichoke pizza, and this variety was the Chicken Bacon Artichoke DeLite. To die for!

Cinnamon Wheel pizza, with cream cheese frosting.

The half-cherry, half-apple Dessert Pizza, also with cream cheese frosting. Can you believe only $3.49 each for this and the Cinna Wheel? Man, I just couldn't resist.

Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2615 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total Calories Eaten - 1294
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 915
MFD Calorie Balance - 1321 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 4.6 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 68 (448, I got an extra 30 points for achieving my meaningful goal for this two-week period. I got my Medical Transcription studying up and running, and I've generally been working on my time efficiency, trying to get more accomplished every day.)
Exercise - 45 minutes of circuit training class at the Rec Center, got a ton of exercise points for that. Also, did some serious house-cleaning today, and got exercise/activity points for that, too. Thus, the high number today.

I've been a good girl. I really, really have. And it's maybe lame to celebrate with food, falling off the wagon, so to speak, but Sue says it's nice to have an "anythying goes" day, because it's fun at first, but then your body says, "Hey, where'd all the healthy food go?" You feel bloated, and want to get back on the wagon. I say, bring it on, sister, bring it on. Reese's E.T. Munchies cookies for me tomorrow. But here is something healthy I'll be going back to starting Sunday:

Yummy! It's a veggie tuna dip, 7 Triscuit Reduced Fat crackers, a sliced roma tomato, and a nectarine. And the whole thing is only 334 calories. Wahoo!!

You make the dip with:
-2 tablespoons Naturally Yours fat free sour cream (the one that looks like a black and white cow, so yummy! it's the BEST fat free sour cream, smooth and tangy)
-1/2 cup Bumble Bee tuna chunk light in water
-1/2 cup chopped celery (you could also add some chopped green onions for just a few extra calories, and 1 tablespoon of sliced almonds for only 45 extra calories)
-1/4 tsp. dried dill

This dip reminds me of a similar spread I used to make when I was a young teenager that had a cream cheese base. But this tastes awesome, too, and I'm sure has waaaay less fat and calories than the original.

MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.2 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 35 (380 total this session
Exercise - 25 min of swimming laps at the Rec Center, alternating 4 different swim strokes. I usually do 30, but the swimming lessons were starting. I took another 5 minutes, and did some water jogging in the far corner of the pool. I also got some exercise/activity points for my two hours of shopping. Wal-Mart's a pretty big place. If I wasn't losing weight, I'd probably feel guilty for counting this, but I think the numbers are panning out. Shopping is on the MFD activity list, so I take what I can get.

Oops!! I accidently wrote over the top of this post on Friday, Jul 16, so I'm rewriting it and reposting it. I can't remember what I wrote about, probably looking forward to Free Day, but I did have all the stats and exercise info on MFD, so that's why they are still posted here.

223.8 - New Calorie Baseline

Weight - 223.8 lb
Weight Lost - 11.6 lb. in 21 days

Today's MFD calorie allowance - 2130 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
MFD occupation activity level - Heavy Activity
HWHL calorie allowance - 2189.3 for a 2 lb loss/week rate
Total Calories Eaten - 1569
Total MFD Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 427
MFD Calorie Balance - 561 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
MFD Weight Loss Rate Today - 3.1 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 45 (345 total this session, I did the extra challenge today of commenting about my favorite HWHL post)
Exercise - Precor Elliptical efx576i, 2.18 miles, 3700 strides, 337.9 cal, 30 min. alternating forwards and backwards every 5 min.

You might notice that my stats have changed. I've added a few things, and I changed my baseline calorie allowance on myfooddiary.com. It wasn't reflecting the weight loss I've been experiencing over the last three weeks, so I went into my profile and selected heavy activity for my occupational activity level. I think it more accurately reflects my true calorie allowance, and what has been going on with my body. I could be eating a ton more food, and still lose 2 lb. per week.

Man, I was feeling the strict control of the past three weeks today. I feel a "free day" coming on (it means that on HWHL I get to blow off my calorie allowance one day in each challenge period, about two weeks each, and still earn 10 points for my calorie range.) I'm going to plot it out, and eat cookies, pizza, and ice cream. How bad is that? But I need a break, maybe Saturday.

My brain hurts, and I think it made me extra tired and hungry today. I've been working every spare minute I can on my Medical Transcription course, writing in the margins of my manual all the time blocks I work on it. I had to do that, because I get lots of interruptions with five kids, and I wasn't sure what I was really doing every day. I clocked five hours yesterday, but only 2-1/2 today. It's my goal to learn how to be more efficient with my time, to quit getting distracted so much, and just GET IT DONE, whatever I'm working on. So, all this focus I'm trying to achieve is straining my brain. Keeping up with and writing for three blogs is kind of a big time drain, but I love doing it.

224.0 - Cholesterol Medication

Weight - 224.0 lb
Weight Lost - 11.4 lb. in 20 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1480
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 568
Calorie Balance - 338 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.7 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 37 (300 total this session)

Exercise - 30 min. workout on my Wave, with 3lb. & 5 lb. weights. Plus, a 15 min abs workout.

I took Gil in to the doctor today for a possible sinus infection (a whole saga I won't go into), but while I was there, I brought up my recent cholesterol test. The P.A. said that diet and exercise will only reduce cholesterol about 10%. After hearing that, and thinking about that obnoxious 305 cholesterol number, I said, "Okay, give me a prescription!" My dad had a heart attack in his 40's (Mom do I have this right?) and he now has very poor health and circulation issues which will probably kill him in the next five to ten years, and that's if he's lucky enough to live that long. Of course, he has smoked and had poor eating habits his whole adult life, despite the activity required of him in his military career. Now he sits at home, tied to an oxygen tank, and not getting out of bed some days because of the poor circulation in his legs and the pain it causes him. He gets invited to things and can't leave the house because of his poor health. There's a good chance I've inherited his bad cholesterol. However, I think I've inherited good blood pressure from my mother. At least that much is in my favor.

The good new is that whatever crud has built up in my arteries is potentially reversible with medication and a healthy lifestyle. I'm looking forward to getting tested again in three months, and hopefully I've reduced my risk factors a great deal. I wish I could get an actual, real peek at the state of my arteries, but the P.A. said that it's very invasive (they guide a thin wire from the artery in your thigh up to your heart), and the insurance won't pay for something like that unless you are having a lot of dangerous symptoms that would indicate that kind of procedure is necessary. So, I will do all I can to be healthy, and hope for the best.

Exercise - Tried out a new piece of equipment at the gym today. It's a Precor 100i, and I looked it up on the Precor website. It's called an Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT). To me it's kind of like a cross between an elliptical trainer and a stair climber machine. I did 30 min, 2.18 miles, 337 calories

I continued the new trend from yesterday, and worked out to April 2010 General Conference on my MP3. At first, I was afraid I wouldn't have as good a workout, because I wasn't rockin' it and keeping up the tempo. That probably is at least a little true, but I did really enjoy the talks, and was struck by some things Julie Beck said. Man, I've got a long post coming about that one, but I'm saving it for my regular blog, or maybe the HWHL blog.

I made my Medical Transcription studying a priority today. In the margins of my study manual, I wrote all the blocks of time I was able to work on it. Lots of interruptions, as you can imagine, with meal times and five kids. But I managed to accumulate 5-1/2 hours today. That pretty much tells me I could probably work part-time 20 to 25 hours a week once I'm done and certified. I hope I can make it work.

226.0 - Sunday Exercise

Exercise - 25 minute mile walk after dinner.

I had this brief conversation with Sue today about the rightness or wrongness of exercise on a Sunday, since the Sabbath day is supposed to be holy. But, frankly, it kills me to do absolutely nothing. Sue suggested that a walk/run while listening to Church music or materials would probably be a good thing. So that is what I did - I downloaded some Conference Talks from this past April session, put on my shoes, and went for a walk. It was really relaxing, and I learned some good things in the process. Pres. Monson sure has a spunky sense of humor. You gotta love him.

Now, I'm kind of dreading the coming of winter, when it will be too yucky most of the time to go for an evening walk on Sunday. Any suggestions?

And a quick shout-out to Jenn. Thanks for your great comments!! It's great to know someone is following the blog, and getting something out of it. Wahoo! I hope you find myfooddiary.com a good tool. I'll have to post some more recipes as I keep experimenting.

About the scales not budging - sometimes your body resists the weight-loss as it tries to figure out whether or not it needs to store fat. Over the years I have found that several things affect my weight-loss besides just the bottom line calorically. How I spread out my calories matters. If you are getting the bulk of your calories at night, your body is more likely to store them as fat when you sleep. If you don't exercise regularly, then your body is resistant to weight loss. I think also that you have to push yourself when you exercise, so you get your heartrate into a certain zone, so that your body starts telling itself, "Woah, I need to ditch some of this weight, because I need to perform at a higher level." Also make sure you are drinking plenty of water, so your body has the resources to get rid of the things you don't need. And of course, eating too few calories is also a problem, ironically, but that's because it can force your body into starvation mode, and it will cling to the weight. I'm almost always eating under my calorie limit, and my body seems to be okay with it, but I'm on the lookout for when my body stops being okay with that, and I can start rethinking my calorie structure. Good luck, and keep going!

225.6 - On My Way to 20!

Weight - 225.6 lb
Weight Lost - 9.8 lb. in 17 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1455
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 567
Calorie Balance - 371 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.7 lb loss/week
HWHL Points Today - 38 (194 total this session)

Exercise - 30 min. on my Wave stepper with 3lb & 5lb weights, 5 minutes of crunches, and 25 minutes of walking after dinner.

Well, I was wanting to lose 10 pounds by the reunion, and if I keep doing what I've been doing I will have lost 15 pounds, maybe even 20!! I've got three weeks left, and at the rate I've been going, I'll be pretty darn close to 20 pounds lost, if not over that. How awesome is that?!!! Also, I can now fit into my two pairs of size 20 pants without having to lie on the bed. Ten more pounds, and they will start to be loose. My waist hasn't changed, but I've lost 1.5 inches in my hips. Progress feels good.

I timed myself walking a mile tonight after dinner. I walked about as fast as I could, keeping up a pretty brisk pace. But it was still only a 20 min. mile! Sheesh! It's my short, stubby legs. I just can't eat up the ground with my short stride. I want to start running, but I'm afraid at this weight, I'll seriously hurt my joints. I was reading somewhere online today that when you run, you impact your joints with 5 to 6 times your body weight, and at 225, that's seriously going to hurt me over time, so I'm going to wait until I'm 180 or less.

It's been a while since I listed what I eat, and you might be wondering what I got for my 1455 calories today. Believe it or not, I really am going to bed with a happy tummy.

Breakfast - 40 oz. of water before and during my workout, two small homemade wheat pancakes, 8 oz of orange juice, 4 thin slices of Land o Frost ham, 1 cup of watermelon, Total calories - 308
Lunch - 1.25 cups of brussel sprouts and 3/4 cup of mirepoix cajun style blend (a frozen bag of chopped onions, celery, and green pepper, which is on sale at Smith's this week), and I sauted all of them in 1 teaspoon of Smart Balance Light spread, I had two more small pancakes (I love to make a big batch of pancakes then snack on them throughout the day like you would slices of bread), 1 Laughing Cow Light cheese wedge with 3 Reduced Fat Triscuit crackers, and 16 oz of water. Total calories - 294
Dinner - 2 oz. of Baked Tostitos Scoops chips, 2 oz of diced grilled chicken, 1/2 cup of chopped roma tomatoes, 1 cup of chopped romaine hearts lettuce, 1/4 cup of salsa, 1/4 cup of my homemade guacamole, and 2 tablespoons of Naturally Yours Fat Free Sour Cream (this one is my favorite, it has a wonderfully light and tangy flavor instead of tasting like cardboard), 1 cup of watermelon, 16 oz of water. Total calories - 494
Dessert/Snack - 3.18 oz of my homemade Wheat Banana Bread Light (I'm going to put the recipe on Healthy Wife Happy Life), 16 oz. of skim milk, then later 12 more oz of water. Total calories - 358

The usual weakness in my eating plan, is that I don't get breakfast until three or four hours after I've woken up. By the time I get my brain awake, check a few things on the computer, and exercise, the kids have woken up and I spend time helping them get breakfast before I finally eat. I've got to work on getting my exercise done well before they wake up, so I can get my breakfast eaten before five kids need something from me.

I have finally joined the Healthy Wife Happy Life blog with my sister, Sue, and posted my first entry, All About Becky. I'll let you follow the link to my lengthy, lengthy post. But here is my official "before" pic. In a year, it will be fun to compare it with one from next summer.

226.0

Weight - 226.0 lb
Weight Lost - 9.4 lb. in 15 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1729
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 593
Calorie Balance - 130 left to eat at 2lb loss/week rate
Weight Loss Rate Today - 2.3 lb loss/week (If I keep up this rate, I will break 200 the first week of October, and reach my goal of 150 by March)
HWHL Points Today - 36 (121 total this session)

Exercise - 30 minutes workout on my Firm Wave, and 15 minutes of ab exercises. I did 8 old-school sit-ups and 8 scissor kicks. I want to increase this dramatically over time.

I used my Firm Wave to work out today. Man, it's a good workout! I was sweating like crazy. It's a deceptively simple piece of equipment, but you can do a lot with it. Point the curved side up, and it's like a stepper. Point the curved side down, and you can rock on it to work a different set of muscle groups and improve your balance. It's also a good support for doing crunches. And if you live in tiny spaces, or house-bound a lot during the winter, you can still get a great workout.

227.8 - Joining the HWHL Group & Rec Center Pics

Weight - 227.8 lb
Weight Lost - 7.5 lb. in 14 days

Total Calories Eaten - 1657
Total Exercise/Activity Calories Earned - 535

Exercise - Water Aerobics at Rec Center, 50 min.

Well, I'm joining the bandwagon at Healthy Wife Happy Life, the health blog that Sue is a part of (and which converted me to calorie-counting), so I'll be recording my "HWHL points" here, too. I'm looking forward to meeting challenges and sharing lifestyle changes (i.e. weight loss) with others. Although I think the myfooddiary.com stats are pretty close to what the HWHL points are based on, I'll put the HWHL recommended calculations here, so I'm comparing apples to apples when it comes to the point system. For my age, weight, and activity level, I can eat 3189.3 cal to maintain weight, 2689.3 cal to lose 1 pound a week, or eat 2189.3 cal to lose 2 pounds a week. I've been falling under that easily the past two weeks and putting myself in the 1689.3 cal 3lb-weight-loss-a-week category, but I need to add more fruits (2 cups/day needed) and veggies 2-1/2 cups/day), so I'll be trying to eat around 1700 to 1800 calories more consistently. The HWHL session started Monday, so I'm backtracking a few days and putting my points for each day here:
Monday Jul 5 - 24
Tuesday Jul 6 - 24
Wednesday Jul 7 - 37

Now it's time to brag on my town. I live in Rock Springs, Wyoming, with a population of around 25,000. That's probably small compared to where a lot of people live. But that means that we have a lot less available services, shopping, and activities than bigger cities. But the one thing I absolutely LOVE about my town is the Rock Springs Family Recreation Center. For a town this size, to me it's the Taj Mahal of public facilities. Let's have a pictoral essay, but hold on to your britches, there are 25 pics! The place looks deserted, but it was a slow time of day, and I also waited for people to get out of the picture, in case they were uneasy about having their picture taken.

This is the outside view of the new indoor pool addition to our rec center. Awesome waterslides!! The addition should be opening sometime around the beginning of August. Yipee!!

Wonderful open windows around the indoor pool.

I wish I could get a big picture of all this facility encompasses, but it is so big, that one pic won't fit everything. But here is the main front entrance.

The view coming in the front doors.

The map of the rec center is just to your right as you come in. You can click on this pic to see a bigger view of the map. The upstairs of the facility.

The downstairs of the facility.

The front desk, to your right as you come in. This is a wonderfully clean, efficient facility run by no-nonsense, professional but warm people.

One of the workout rooms, where I've had a few aerobics/step classes.

Straight past the front desk is an eating area, with these vending machines.

I often see kids hanging out here, waiting for rides, or just passing time.

To the left of the front desk is a workout machine area, where I sometimes do my elliptical workout.

Here is the view off the side of railing by the workout machines. I love this corner, where there are these great big steps/seating where parents can watch their kids' swim lessons, or watch people play raquetball. All the raquetball courts have glassed-in front walls, where you can see all the action.

Tucked in between the raquetball courts and the pool is this great little playland for kids.

Weight room.

Another weight room.

This is called the Warm Up room, where I often do my elliptical workout. It's just around the corner from the locker rooms.

The women's locker room.

There is a jacuzzi in the women's locker room.

The shower stalls are always clean.

The lap pool where I do laps and have water aerobics.

Another hot tub, which is by the lap pool.

This is the new section they have built on to the existing lap pool.

The new indoor pool addition, still under construction, but ready soon. Awesome kids' mini water park, a lazy river, a hot tub, a climbing wall, and the water slide stairs in the background.
This is the ice rink, where Dani and I take ice skating lessons. I can't wait for those to start up in the fall!! When I break 200 (which should be before my birthday in October), I'm going to treat myself to some new gear, maybe some new ice skates and a cute fleece vest!!
This is the walking/running track, with the basketball courts below, separated by these white, gauzy screens. There is even a batting cage at the far end of the gym.

I LOVE this place!
